How to set up 2FA on crypto exchanges with Ydenticator

Crypto accounts are among the highest-value targets online: a single successful account takeover can be irreversible. This guide shows how to enable authenticator-app 2FA on exchanges such as Binance, Kraken and Coinbase using Ydenticator, so every code is released only after a personal challenge on a device-bound key.

Why crypto exchanges are different

  • Transactions settle irreversibly, so account takeover means permanent loss, not a chargeback.
  • SIM-swap attacks make SMS 2FA a weak choice for exchange accounts.
  • Seed files synced to the cloud can be stolen at rest, together with every code they generate.

Before you start

  • An exchange account with authenticator-app 2FA available in security settings.
  • A Ydenticator key created on the device you will use to scan the QR code.
  • Your Ydenticator recovery codes stored offline, in case the device is lost.

Step 1: Open your exchange's 2FA settings

  1. Binance: Profile → Security → Authenticator App.
  2. Kraken: Security → Two-Factor Authentication → Sign-in and Funding 2FA.
  3. Coinbase: Settings → Security → 2-step verification → Authenticator.
  4. Choose the authenticator-app option rather than SMS, then reveal the QR code.

Step 2: Scan the QR code with Ydenticator

  1. Open Ydenticator on the device holding your key and go to Scan.
  2. Point the camera at the exchange's QR code; standard otpauth:// codes switch to Standard TOTP automatically.
  3. Save the provider, then answer the challenge question to generate the first 6-digit code.

Step 3: Confirm and secure recovery

  1. Paste the generated code into the exchange to confirm setup.
  2. Store the exchange's own backup code offline, separately from your device.
  3. Generate Ydenticator recovery codes and keep them on paper or in an encrypted export.

Why this protects high-value accounts

Ydenticator's profile is encrypted with AES-GCM-256 under a non-extractable key held in hardware-backed storage (Windows Hello or the iOS Secure Enclave). Copying the file alone does not produce a working code.

Each 2FA request also requires a fresh answer from your 30-question profile, so a stolen device without you cannot mint codes for your exchange account.
